Pre-Production Techniques

Understanding Requirements for Production
Resources:
We had to gather a variety of resources when preparing for production to ensure that we produced the best quality product possible in our groups.
Equipment suppliers: Our school, Pudsey Grangefield, provided the majority of equipment that we needed to produce out TV advertisement (TV advertising unit), our single camera drama (single camera drama unit) and the show that was aired on our school's show: Friday World (Multi-Camera Techniques unit) The resources that we gained from our equipment supplier was essential because the equipment that we used is expensive and we do not posses the funds to acquire it without assistance. Examples of some of the equipment that we used can be found in my written work in task seven of my single camera drama unit.
Staff: We had to use some of the staff working in our school when creating our TV advertisement for the Geography department as we had to offer viewers a professional insight into the inner workings of the subject.
Talent: When creating our multi camera drama for Friday World we had to discover which one of our group's members would be the best fitted to be the role of presenter, which was an essential role due to the mode of the program.
Codes of practice and Regulations:
There are many codes of practice and regulations that must be adhered to when embarking on creating your own production, the violations of which can have serious consequences.
Copyright: The definitions of this have been explored in task ten of the understanding industries unit. I had to consider copyright when choosing the music for my single camera drama and my TV advertisement as when these are uploaded onto this blog they could violate copyright as I have not created the audio.
Health and Safety: Requirements such as public liability insurance and employment liability (definition can be found in task ten of understanding industries) insurance are covered in the insurance that Pudsey Grangefield School has an educational facility. However, when filming out of school for our single camera drama production we had to fill in a risk assessment in preparation which can be found in task eleven of the single camera drama unit.
Regulatory bodies: In the pre-production stage of development for my TV advert I had to consider the advertising codes for television in order to make sure that I did not violate them and in task eleven of this unit I considered the code: 5.1.1- No advertisement may directly or by implication mislead about any material fact or characteristic of a product or service.
Trade unions: During task ten of my understanding industries unit I had to research media legislation and convey the advantages of belonging to a trade union in the world of employment.

Obtaining Resources for Production
Equipment:
The type of equipment that is used by a company/team is essential to the success of any production as it can greatly impact quality, effect, genre, audience and more.
Vision: In task seven of my single camera drama unit, a list of the specific types of cameras that I used for the production of my single camera drama can be used. We also used a small hand held camera to enhance the effect of the chase scene.
Sound: When recording the children sing the nursery rhyme that is played in the background of our single camera drama we used a voice recorder as we required a high quality of sound, the specific name of the voice recorder that we used can also be found in task seven of my written work for the single camera drama unit. We also used Garageband in order to edit the sound, making it fit its purpose more securely.
Software: Some of the software that I have used throughout this course to aid the production of my practical work in all of the units has included iMovie, Audacity and Garageband. All of this software was used in school as I do not posses an Apple Mac computer. I used this site (Blogger) to record my written work as it easy to access when working in a range of areas and from a range of different computers. This can also be evidenced in task seven of my single camera drama unit.
Hardware: I have had to use the computers that are provided by the media department in this school as much of the software that must be used throughout this course is not compatible with Windows computers as opposed to Apple Macs. I also used the school's printers when issuing my questionnaire that I created for my TV advertising unit which can be found in task nine.
Support Equipment: When filming our TV advertisement and our single camera drama we used a tripod provided by school in conjunction with our camera in order to create steady shots to make our productions look more professional.
Personnel:
There are wide range of roles that must be filled during the completion of a production in order for it to be finished in the proper manner and to a good quality. These roles were filled by members of our groups.
Photographer: When preparing to shoot my single camera drama it was important that we made a storyboard conveying some of the camera shots that we will be using in the making of our film. We photographed items in different positions to illustrate this using a digital camera. This can be found in task nine of my single camera drama unit.
Editor: In the process of transforming the footage that we collected in our practical work we had to edit the film to make it look professional. This was done on iMovie. A description of how our single camera drama was edited can be found in the treatment which is labelled as task eight on the single camera drama unit.
Camera Operator: During the filming of our multi camera drama for Friday World in a live setting we had to have several camera operators in order to give the person who was working on the editing desk a variety of shots and angles to choose from. A plan of how we set up our studio can be found in task four of the multi camera techniques unit.
Sound Operator: When producing the program for Friday World in a live setting we also had to assign a person to control the sound levels and the status of the microphones that we were using. Details of this can be found in the multi-camera techniques unit.

Applying Production Logistics
Planning:
There are many planning processes that can be chosen from during the pre-production stage of development in order to make sure that everything goes well and that mistakes are minimal. There are less likely be set backs if the planning process is completed to a satisfactory level.
Budget: When planning our TV advertisement we had to explore how much each aspect of production would cost us in a professional environment. Evidence of this can be seen in the brief which is contained in task seven of my TV advertising unit.
Schedule: In task ten of my single camera drama unit I produced a production schedule which contained deadlines for individual task that needed to be completed. I feel this helped the process run smoothly and in an organised fashion.
Health and Safety issues:
It is important to be aware of and to adhere to health and safety regulations when planning and making a production to prevent injuries and complications due to these injuries such as law suits which can be very expensive.
Health and Safety legislation: Research into health and safety legislation can be found in task ten of my understanding industries unit as for this task I had to do some research into employment liability insurance and other media legislation.
Risk Assessments: We completed a risk assessment for our single camera drama as we had to film offsite. This can be found under task eleven of my single camera drama unit.
Documentation:
Documenting aspects of production is important as it keeps a record of how you reached your final product and can be very helpful if something needs to be revisited due to a problem etc.
Studio plan: A studio plan that I previously completed can be found in task four of my multi camera techniques unit on this blog. This was an important piece of documentation as it ensured that our set up was correct when we came to filming on live TV.
Storyboard: A storyboard for my single camera drama can be found in task nine of my single camera drama unit. This helped us to know what camera shots we needed to included and in what order.
Mind maps: I produced a mind map of my ideas on task three of my multi-camera techniques unit. I was then able to choose the best ideas from the ones that I had recorded and put them to use in my production.
